From the Buena Vista Social Club™

OMARA PORTUONDO 85 TOUR (with special guests Roberto Fonseca, Anat Cohen, & Regina Carter).

The charismatic leading lady of the Buena Vista Social Club™, Omara Portuondo,transcended the landmark album and film with two Grammy-nominated records of her own. Following the hugely successful Adios Tour with Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club last year, Portuondo celebrates her 85th anniversary, and 70 years of performing professionally, with a musical party featuring special guests pianist Roberto Fonseca, clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen, and violinist Regina Carter. The artists will perform timeless Cuban classics as well as songs from their own repertoires.

MARIZA

Performing for the first time in Boston since 2009, Mariza is a charismatic fado singer with a clarion voice and mesmerizing stage presence. Whether singing traditional numbers or new songs, Mariza honors the legacy of fado, Portugal’s expressive lament of destiny. She is touring in support of her stunning 2015 release, Mundo, her first new album in five years.

DIEGO EL CIGALA

Three-time Grammy winner Diego el Cigala has captivated audiences all over the world with his gravelly voice and passionate interpretation of flamenco. Born in Madrid, he has often been touted as "The Sinatra of Flamenco.” His various collaborations with world-renowned Latin American artists have earned him a reputation for seamlessly melding the rhythms and melodies of his Spanish Gitano heritage with styles ranging from bolero to son, tango, and Afro-Caribbean jazz.

TOMATITO

Winner of four Grammys, José Fernández Torres, known as Tomatito, is a guitarist of major significance within the realm of flamenco. His unique approach and elegant style highlight his unprecedented musical sensitivity and interpretive power. He will be accompanied by a full ensemble and guest dancer José Maya.

ESTAMPAS PORTEÑAS TANGO COMPANY

Founded in Buenos Aires in 1997 by the distinguished dancer and choreographer Carolina Soler, Estampas Porteñas Tango Company presents the Boston premiere of its thrilling new production, Deseos . . . Stories of Longing and Desire Told Through Argentine Tango and Music. Performed by a dozen exquisitely skilled dancers and accompanied by ardent, soul-filled live music, Deseos celebrates the greatest artistic elements of Argentina, including the indomitable tango, the athletic malambo of the gauchos, and the country’s wide range of musical styles.

THE PEDRITO MARTINEZ GROUP

Cuban singer and percussionist Pedrito Martinez and his band have been a huge hit in Manhattan for nearly a decade. A master of Cuban music, Martinez goes beyond the traditional form, drawing on complex rhythms, jazz, and pop. Martinez’s musical talent and onstage charisma have garnered numerous awards, including a Grammy nomination, Modern Drummer’s Percussionist of the Year, and a Thelonious Monk award. The group’s second album, Habana Dreams, was released in the spring of 2016 with special guests that included Rubén Blades, Issac Delgado, Wynton Marsalis, Angélique Kidjo, and more.

LAS CAFETERAS & LA YEGROS

Born in the streets of Los Angeles, Las Cafeteras has taken the music scene by storm with its infectious live performances that remix Latin roots music in what the LA Times has called a “uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia, and rock. . . . Live, they’re magnetic.” 

A powerful presence in Buenos Aires’s underground scene, Mariana Yegros brings new energy to cumbia, splicing tropical rhythms and Argentine folk with electro dancehall and hip-hop. Her vibrant sound and larger-than-life performance presence is “feminine, joyous, and tropical. It’s a revolution you can dance to.”—Time Out.
