I am Black and Beautiful: Morenas in Iberoamerica
La Donna Musicale and Rumbarroco perform a program of songs and polyphonic settings that honor the Morenas (dark-skinned Black women) in the Ibero-American repertory, beginning with settings of Nigra sum sed formosa from the Songs of Songs, all the way to current folk representations in South America.
The concert will include early vocal music from the Iberian Renaissance and Baroque Cancioneros with poetic texts that depict Black women in endearing terms.
The performance will also include African-influenced instrumental music from Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and Spain linked to today’s practices of traditional music. Music from the Palacios, Upsala, and Sablonara
